Lauren Coetzee

Lauren is a doctoral student (beginning Sept. 2023) at Luxembourg University in the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History. Using the Time Traveller database, her topic “Guns & Violence” examines the spread and impact of gunpowder across pre-colonial Africa. She holds a master’s degree (history) from Stellenbosch University, South Africa and has a special interest in how geography and the political economy shape long-run institutions. Lauren started as an RA in 2022, and now manages the cartographic database at Time Traveller.
